HOW TO PICK THE PERFECT BED SHEETS

How to pick the perfect Bed Sheets

Our Guide to thread count, material and weaves will help you make the best choice.

By Corne van Breemen owner of Good Night Linen

Thread count versus yarn size

Proper Bed sheets are a truly worthwhile investment.  Just as the right blanket or duvet inner provides the perfect warmth for your cosy cocoon, the right sheets provide a comforting layer against your skin.  Slipping into a silky set of sheets is a relatively inexpensive luxury, while cheaply made bargain bedding provides a false economy given itchy, unpleasant sleep environment it creates.

Does thread count matter?

Wonderful bed linen relies on the quality of raw cotton and the yarn it produces. The finest yarns feel fantastic next to your skin and also wear really well. But many of us get caught up in the lure of high thread count.

Thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. It tells you how closely woven a fabric is.

It's a common mistake to assume that a higher thread count means a better quality fabric. In fact, the fineness of yarn is more important. Look for a minimum of 200, but no higher than a 400.  Anything over 400 is likely to uncomfortably trap body heat.

Sheets falling within the Thread count sweet spot of 280 to 400 will have a smooth, soft, absorbent and breathable feel.  They’ll wear better and shrink less, meaning you’ll replace them less often than their cheaper counterparts.

CHOOSING THE MATERIAL.

Cotton

Cotton is the most widely used fibre for making bed linen. Long lasting and easy to launder, it’s renowned for its natural breathability and comfortable cool feeling.  The longer the 'staple' of cotton, the finer the yarn, and so the smoother, softer and stronger the bed linen.

Supima Cotton

Supima Cotton, short for Superior US Pima Cotton, is extra-long staple cotton grown in the most sun-drenched parts of America.  It’s prized for its incredible strength and softness and cosy warmth. Durability and longevity.

Egyptian Cotton

Egyptian cotton is deemed one of the finest cottons due to the unusual long staple. Pure Egyptian cotton sheets are very expensive. In most countries Egyptian cotton is blended with long or short staple cotton varieties to supply the world market demand. You do not always get what you paid for.

Easy-Care Cotton/Poly

Cotton Polyester blends produce bed linen that is easy to launder and needs little to no ironing.  BUT beware of poor quality easy-care fabrics that quickly bobble and/or whose easy care finish washes out.  Good quality poly cotton will have a 60% cotton and 40% polyester blend, woven to a 200 thread percale that will feel smooth and soft.

Weaves

Percale

Percale is not a variety of cotton.

Percale is a type of plain weave – one thread over, one thread under – that allows air to pass through, giving it a lovely powdery coolness and breathability.  Cotton or poly cotton can be woven in percale and is commonly used for a 200 thread count up.

Sateen

Sateen is an elegant weave of four threads over, one thread under, which places more threads on the surface of the cloth to give a silky smooth feel and sheen. Sateen is very special to sleep in and will embrace your skin with permanent soft touch.    Do not confuse Sateen with Satin.

Jacquard

Jacquard is woven on a special loom to create a multi-dimensional pattern of sateen (which is raised threads) and matt(which is flat), usually in stripe, check or floral design.

All your bed linen pieces

Pillowcase – Housewife or Oxford?

A housewife pillowcase is an edge to edge pillowcase that fits to the contours of your pillow. It’s usually the one you sleep on and the most popular style for children.  An oxford pillowcase has an extra border beyond the seamed edge. If layering pillows, we suggest you use a housewife pillowcase underneath, but it’s down to personal preference.

Bottom sheet - fitted

A fitted sheet has elasticated corners to keep it secure when you move about in your sleep.  The sides should be deep enough to fit your mattress.

Top Sheet

You need a flat top sheet if you make a bed with blankets.  You can also use one with a duvet to give your bed a tailored look.  When using your duvet as well as a top sheet, your top sheet can be one size smaller so no tuck in is necessary

Duvet Cover – Standard or oxford?

A duvet cover comes in two styles: a standard ‘bag’, which is and edge-to-edge seamed cover and an Oxford which has an extra border, just like a Oxford pillowcase.

 Bed wraps

A bed wrap is available in different colours and have replaced the old bed frill/Valance. The bed wrap is used for covering you mattress base to add that elegant finish to your bed and interior of your room.  With a bed wrap you do not need to lift you mattress from your base anymore.

TIP

Make your bed linen easy to identify by using coloured ribbon ties or by storing each set in a different pillowcase.

Signs You Need a New Mattress and Pillows

Ok so most people would agree that a comfortable pillow is very important to a good night’s sleep, but many of us make a crucial mistake when it comes to our comfy favorite pillows…we are holding on to them for way too long and they could even be making us sick.

Do you know when you have to replace your mattress and pillows?
I suppose your answer is no because according to a recent survey conducted internationally by a couple university students, 77% of the people including men and women don’t know when they have to get new mattress and pillows. This means majority of us in the world use mattresses and pillows way over their expiry. This is not lethal but it does negatively impact your health.
It is indeed very crucial that we all should replace our mattresses and pillows after a certain period of time. Not doing so can damage our spinal cord; result in mild to severe back pain, neck pain, headache, joint issues, uncomfortable sleep and many other health problems. In order to avoid all these and many other health issues, you should replace your pillows and mattresses after a certain period of time.
There are certain signs that indicate that now is the right time to get rid of your old mattress and old pillows.
Mattresses are very durable. If used carefully, you don’t have to replace your mattress for years. But you just cannot totally rely on what manufacturer says. Most of the manufacturers give lifetime warranty of their mattresses. This doesn’t mean you are free to use the same mattress for a lifetime.
Even if you use your mattress with extreme care, you rotate it after every few months and you use mattress protectors, you still need to get rid of your old mattress as soon as you see following signs:
o    Your mattress looks fine but it starts losing its comfort and it doesn’t feel comfortable.
o    Every morning you wake up with aches and stiffness in different parts of your body.
o    You cannot sleep well and you wake up several times in the night without any reason.

o    If your mattress loses its shape or it starts to wear or you can see depression(s).

o    You feel much comfortable everywhere else than on your bed.

As soon as you start seeing these signs, better change your mattress. Normally you won’t see all these signs altogether instead you will see one or maybe two signs. If you don’t replace your mattress then, eventually you will see all of these signs.
Pillows
Pillows have much shorter life span than mattresses. The average life of a pillow is no more than 2 years but people use them for 5 and more years. Experts recommend that you should change your pillow after every two years even if it looks new or if it shows any of these signs:
o    It has lost its shape

o    It is no longer comfortable and soft

o    You feel pain in your neck and shoulders every morning when you wake up

o    It is no more fluffy rather it is flat

o    It has been 2 years

Again, don’t wait for all of these signs instead as soon as you see any of these signs, discard your old pillow and get a new one.
You see how easy it is to figure out when you have to get rid of your old pillows and mattresses and when to get new mattress and pillows. If you will stick to these instructions and recommendations, you can save yourself from several health issues that result from use of old and substandard mattress and pillows. Don’t let your bedding ruin your health. You and your health are priceless; better take care of yourself before it gets too late.
Don’t hesitate to spend money on high quality pillows and expensive mattresses.
Every penny that you spend is paid off in the long-run.

Guide to Buying Bed Linen

Guide to Buying Bed Linen

Helpful tips on how to buy bed linen from Good Night Linen.

Good Night Linen is the South African and Africa distributor that form part of the team Beaumont & Brown.uk that has been helping people sleep well for over 30 years and has a depth of knowledge about what to look for when purchasing the finest quality bed linen.  Beaumont & Brown is a renowned company supplying quality bed linen to five star hotels globally.  Now you can buy that quality through our website www.goodnightlinen.com and enjoy at home.

Founder and Director of Beaumont & Brown.uk Robin Beaumont offer his advice.

·         “Invest in quality sheets but don’t buy anything too dense – for optimum comfort and care that maximum thread-count worth considering should be no higher than 600T.  The ideal thread-count is 400T percale.  A great tip is if you see a high thread-count always ask to make sure a fine single ply yarn is used.  There is a misconception that the denser the better and this is certainly not the case.

·         I suggest not being overly hung up on buying Egyptian Cotton.  The Egyptian Cotton “brand” is heavily marketed and the reality is that high quality, long staple cotton is made all over the world, the top five cotton producing countries are actually China, USA, India, Pakistan and Brazil.  Much so called Egyptian Cotton is actually imported from these countries to meet demand.

·         When selecting your sizes allow for shrinkage; well-finished cotton will shrink around 3% after the first wash and then never again.  Reputable companies allow for this and the sizes given are after the estimated shrinking of the first wash.

·         It isn’t necessary to buy polyester for crease free bedding.  Polyester can be quite uncomfortable to sleep under and hot in summer.  If high quality cotton yarn is used and it is finished properly, 100% Cotton bed linen shouldn’t crease that much and any lines should fall out after a few hours use.

·         Like shoes – If you find sheets you like, buy multiple sets! Neutral colours are always a good option as they won’t date.  White will still be fresh and current even in 20 years.”

Good Night Linen has sublimely soft and luxurious, crisp white bed linen, found in top five-star hotels around the world.  Available up to super king size with 400 thread count percale, extra length and depth, the gorgeous white bed linen is incredibly soft to touch due to the quality of the finishing process – 5* sleep almost guaranteed!

Everybody can have the PERFECT Bed.

Considering we spend almost a third of our lives in bed, our master bed may be the single most important piece of furniture in our homes.

If you count all the hours we allot to plumping pillows, smoothing sheets, straightening shams, and fussing over how the whole thing looks, we spend as much time on our beds as in them. Yet the results never look as good as pictures in magazines. Enough, already. I am a busy person and so are you. Here's a fool proof system to make a bed inviting enough to make it hard to say goodbye each morning:

Virtually any bed looks beautiful if it has a woman lying naked in it, on her side, seen from behind, with a sheet carelessly draped across her bottom.

We could try that, I suppose, but I don't know if it's sustainable. What about on days we have to go into the office? How can I make it look good then?

Easy!

You have to get to the heart of it—what is your bedroom for?

Your bedroom is the most private room in the house, and it should be the most personal. Your bed should feel like the ultimate sanctuary and make you happy every time you get into it. So gone are fussy pillows—remember the era of "my husband has to throw 14 tiny pillows onto the floor so he can get into bed?" It's over.

. Here are some tips to make the right choice for yours. Follow these guidelines, and you’ll sleep easy knowing you’ve made smart choices.

·         Start with a great foundation. The most vital part of any master bed is the mattress. Mattresses range in price from a few hundred rand’s to several thousands of rand’s. But no single mattress is right for everyone, and the bed that’s best for you may not have the highest price. Personal preference is key, so be prepared to invest in what’s best for you.

·         Try before you buy. Feel intimidated climbing onto a mattress in a store and settling down as if about to take a nap? Don’t. That’s exactly what you should do – and what the staff at any reputable establishment expects. Take enough time to determine whether a bed’s level of support is right for you. When in doubt, opt for the slightly firmer choice. Ever stay at a hotel or resort where you enjoyed an unbelievable night’s sleep atop a bed that was just perfect? Enquire about the make of mattress the hotel provides guests. Upscale hotels even offer the mattresses and bedding they use for purchase, for guests who want to experience the same level of comfort at home or ask us at Good Night Linen.  We know.

·         Know what you’re hopping into bed with. If you’re sensitive to chemicals, play close attention to the contents of a mattress. Research natural options like those using cotton fabrics, Bamboo or horsehair. Many cheap imitation mattresses contain synthetic materials like formaldehyde and polyurethane foam, which “offgas,” releasing smelly and potentially toxic volatile compounds. It’s enough to make anyone lose sleep, which is decidedly against the point when it comes to beds. If you’re bothered by the smell a mattress gives off in the store, steer clear, because it’s not likely to smell better once you get it home. A good mattress does not smell like plastic.

·         Protect your investment. We’ve established a good mattress is not only a worthwhile luxury but an investment as well, so think about purchasing a mattress protector, which guards against dander and is obviously much easier to launder than a mattress. Flipping your mattress every other month, in addition to taking a vacuum brush to its exterior, will also help your mattress stay in top condition and ensure you do not forfeit your warranty and guarantee.

·         In bedding, thread count counts – but only so much. Thread count can be an important indicator of quality, but what matters most is what those threads are made of: specifically, the thread’s fibres. Cotton-polyester sheets may last longer, but all cotton sheets – specifically, those woven with “Supima,” or “Egyptian long-staple” cotton – will yield a softer, finer hand.

·          What you’ll give up in sheen and longevity, you’ll gain in comfort. Consider having at least 3 sets of bedding: it’ll increase the longevity of each set and - invest in white. It will give you different seasonal options to help change up the look of your master bedroom. If you’re worried about cost, start with a well fitted fitted sheet and flat sheet.  The rest can be added on as time allows your budget, know that bedding doesn’t have to cost a fortune to be fabulous if you have believed to invest in quality.

·         Take cover. The main purpose of a Duvet Inner is warmth. For this purpose, you may want to have two: one for summer and a heavier one for winter but if space does not allow go for an All-season Duvet Inner. A Good Quality Micro Fibre is an ideal choice for an all-season inner. When properly laundered and care for, your Micro Fibre Duvet Inner will keep you cool when you want to be cool and warm when you’re hoping for a toastier slumber. Pillows are also a luxurious place to lay one’s head, but go with a choice that provides the level of support your neck needs. Not too soft and not too hard. A good pillow must be flexible, breathable and maintains its shape as your turn your head and body during the night.

·         Make sure you’ve got a good bedside manner. Now that your bed is outfitted to perfection, the last thing to consider is the bedside table, if you chose to have one. I do, and I keep only the essentials there: soft, incandescent lighting for reading a good book, a scented candle, and my cell phone, which now serves, as it does for many, as my alarm clock. A charger, tucked away so the cord is barely visible, ensures my phone’s just as recharged and ready for the new day as I am.
