Ok so most people would agree that a comfortable pillow is very important to a good night’s sleep, but many of us make a crucial mistake when it comes to our comfy favorite pillows…we are holding on to them for way too long and they could even be making us sick.
Do you know when you have to replace your mattress and pillows?
I suppose your answer is no
because according to a recent survey conducted internationally by a couple
university students, 77% of the people including men and women don’t know when
they have to get new mattress and pillows. This means majority of us in the
world use mattresses and pillows way over their expiry. This is not lethal but
it does negatively impact your health.
It is indeed very crucial that we all should replace our mattresses and pillows after a certain period of time. Not doing so can damage our spinal cord;
result in mild to severe back pain, neck pain, headache, joint issues,
uncomfortable sleep and many other health problems. In order to avoid all these
and many other health issues, you should replace your pillows and mattresses
after a certain period of time.
There are certain signs that indicate that now is the right time to get
rid of your old mattress and old pillows.
Mattresses are very durable. If used carefully, you
don’t have to replace your mattress for years. But you just cannot totally rely
on what manufacturer says. Most of the manufacturers give lifetime warranty of
their mattresses. This doesn’t mean you are free to use the same mattress for a
lifetime.
Even if you use your mattress with extreme care,
you rotate it after every few months and you use mattress protectors, you
still need to get rid of your old mattress as soon as you see following signs:

Your mattress
looks fine but it starts losing its comfort and it doesn’t feel comfortable.
o
Every morning
you wake up with aches and stiffness in different parts of your body.
o
You cannot
sleep well and you wake up several times in the night without any reason.
o
If your
mattress loses its shape or it starts to wear or you can see depression(s).
o
You feel much
comfortable everywhere else than on your bed.
As soon as you start seeing these signs, better
change your mattress. Normally you won’t see all these signs altogether instead
you will see one or maybe two signs. If you don’t replace your mattress then,
eventually you will see all of these signs.
Pillows
Pillows have much shorter life span than mattresses. The
average life of a pillow is no more than 2 years but people use them for 5 and
more years. Experts recommend that you should change your pillow after every
two years even if it looks new or if it shows any of these signs:

It has lost
its shape
o
It is no
longer comfortable and soft
o
You feel pain
in your neck and shoulders every morning when you wake up
o
It is no more
fluffy rather it is flat
o
It has been 2
years
Again, don’t wait for all of these signs instead as
soon as you see any of these signs, discard your old pillow and get a new one.
You see how easy it is to figure out when you have
to get rid of your old pillows and mattresses and when to get new mattress and pillows. If you will stick to these instructions
and recommendations, you can save yourself from several health issues that
result from use of old and substandard mattress and pillows. Don’t let your
bedding ruin your health. You and your health are priceless; better take care
of yourself before it gets too late.
